I think you got a point.
I'm not saying that the background is bad, but as it comes out with a lot of contrast compared to the character, it does take a lot of attention, despite the character being a lot more detailed and smooth.
The character itself though look really nice, and though it doesn't have any clear hard shadows, you still get the impression of a light source.
I also really love the faint texture on the character.
